Pay Rate/Range: The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $69,500 to $90,000/year. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University. The full salary range for this position is $69,500 to $123,500/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Director of Instructional Technology, the Canvas LMS Specialist supports the implementation and campus-wide adoption of the Canvas learning management system at UCSB through the creation, design, and development of high-quality training materials, best practices, and insights. Consults with instructors and Teaching assistants in support of the delivery of training, instructional design, multimedia design, and pedagogical support for Canvas users.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 4-6 years of experience designing or redesigning high-quality academic courses that make use of digital technologies.
  • 4-6 years of experience with learning management systems, preference for Canvas.
  • Thorough knowledge of functional area and understands how work within one course may impact work being done on other courses or in other areas.
  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backward design, learning outcomes, and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of e-learning strategies including but not limited to courses (e.g., processes and technologies, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience in project management (managing time, establishing priorities, distributing responsibilities, meeting milestones and deliverables).
  • 1-3 years of experience managing the administration, coordination and logistics of training workshops and programs, both virtual and in-person.
  • 1-3 years of experience as an instructor in higher education.
  • Advanced degree in education or related academic discipline, instructional systems, or educational technology.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 60% Canvas Training and Consultation - Facilitates, maintains and expands faculty training, workshops, and seminar offerings. Provides consultation to instructors on the development of their courses in Canvas and migrated content from the previous LMS; by understanding pedagogical approaches, course learning objectives, and the instructional components; while collaborating on online course development strategies and co-identifying relevant learning technologies that embrace the design of the curriculum for online delivery. Serves as the online learning support staff to assist faculty, staff and students with their online teaching and learning (technical) related issues. Communicates with technology providers regarding user support related issues. Recommends effective and creative use of technologies to enhance instruction and create new learning environments.
  • 35% Development of Best Practices and Support Materials - Identifies and communicates contextual best practices for applying teaching and learning theories to curriculum design. Provides everyday online support services including but not limited to online teaching consultation, managing course review activities, and developing online teaching resources (i.e. the best practice guides, training tutorials, and the online teaching toolkits). Designs and encourages the adoption of UCSB-specific templates in support of best practices in teaching and learning. Develops training materials including videos, online tutorials, and other multimedia materials to assist faculty with instructional design principles and the use of online teaching and learning tools. Utilizes software such as web page development, desktop publishing, image editing and presentation tools to develop custom products to meet user needs.
  • 5% Other Duties - Collects feedback to improve services and offerings. Analyzes data, identifies campus trends, and communicates online education related issues as needed. Interacts with instructional designers from other UC campuses and contributes to instructional design group(s) among the University of California campuses.
