JOB SUMMARY SEIU 73

LOCATION: John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital
SHIFT: 8AM-4PM

To prepare and administer dosages of radiopharmaceuticals, supplied by manufacturers to patients in preparation for diagnostic procedures under the direct supervision of the Radiologist and Manager of
Imaging Services. The technologist prepare and positions patients for scanning and operates nuclear medicine instruments and imaging equipment, including Photon Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) camera. The technologist is responsible for performing radiation safety and quality control procedures, disposal of radioactive materials, and monitoring work area and patient rooms to ensure that levels of radioactive materials are in accordance with current state regulations. May be required to work in other modalities with appropriate licensure.

Typical Duties


  • Performs Nuclear Medicine and PET/CT Imaging studies.
  • Initiates IV's for the administration of isotopes.
  • Handles, administers, calculates dosage and prepares Radionuclides as required.
  • Performs basic patient care within scope of practice and to departmental standards.
  • Assists in Radiology department as needed.
  • Adheres to the rules and regulations of all local, state, and Federal agencies, and to the standards of all accrediting bodies.
  • Positions patient and equipment, changes collimators, selects technical factor and processes data to produce images meeting Radiologist standards, in a safe and timely manner.
  • Processes images with correct patient demographic and examination information. Submits images, with adequate clinical information for review by Radiologist, as appropriate.
  • Assists in emergencies dealing with possible radioactive material contamination.
  • Performs daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly surveys, quality assurance testing and calibrations as required by State regulations.
  • Performs clerical duties, including answering telephone, completing patient record.
  • Transports, lifts, moves and positions patients as needed to properly and safely complete procedures, to assist others to and from, as well as within the department or to assist patient movement
  • Obtains patient history and explains procedures
  • Maintains clean, well-stocked work area
  • Rotates though standby call on a periodic basis
  • Technologist may be asked to review invoices, review records with health physics consultants
  • May be questioned by regulatory agency inspectors. Assists with dose calculation and administration of therapeutic nuclides
  • Performs basic equipment maintenance, coordinating service calls as required
  • Travels to multiple work sites within Cook County Health
  • Performs other related duties as directed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of an approved School of Nuclear Medicine Technology Program. (Must provide Official Transcripts at time of Interview)
  • Must be registered Nuclear Medicine by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) and/or The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB).(Must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Active License by Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMS) or able to obtain ILLINOIS State Licensure prior to starting employment (Must provide proof at time of interview)
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification obtained through the American Heart Association (Must provide proof at time of interview)
  • One (1) year of Photon Emission Tomography imaging experience (Is Required)
  • Must be able to travel to multiple sites within Cook County Health (Is Required)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Two (2) years of Photon Emission Tomography imaging experience


* Certificated in Computed Tomography

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics



  • Knowledge and understanding in the operation of PET/CT camera.
  • Knowledge of the operation of nuclear instruments and the physical composition of radionuclides, to minimize radiation hazard to patients, self, and other personnel.
  • Must have working knowledge of radiological mathematics, basic radiation physics, radiation units, and radiation protection.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged



Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide
policy and departmental procedures.
