Job Summary:

The Office of Radiation Safety is hiring two Health Physicists to join our team. These individuals will report directly to the Associate Radiation Safety Officer. These Health Physicists play a key role in support and implementation of procedures and processes for the UW-Madison Radiation Safety Program. The Radiation Safety Program establishes radiation safety standards to ensure the health and safety of personnel who work with or who may be exposed to radiation and that members of the general public are protected. This position provides technical expertise and guidance on the safe use of ionizing radiation, non-ionizing radiation, and radioactive materials in research at UW-Madison.

The Health Physicists integrate regulatory requirements and best practices with results from field observations into programmatic actions. They help ensure that radiation exposure to staff members, members of the public, and the environment are As Low As Reasonably Achievable. The Health Physicists are expected to regularly communicate with other members of Environment, Health, and Safety staff to support the creation of a safe work environment.

This position will have a broad range of responsibilities which may include audits or inspections of labs in possession or use of radioactive material/non-ionizing hazards/radiation generating devices, identification/quantification/processing of radioactive waste, review and assessment of novel research protocols using radioactive material, assisting with complex decommissioning projects, radiological surveys, and more depending on department needs as well as employee skills and interest.

Education:

Required
Bachelor's Degree
Preferred focus in Health Physics, Medical Physics, Radiological Health, Nuclear Engineering or related field


Qualifications:

REQUIRED:
- At least two years of relevant work experience. A degree in the topical area may be substituted for work experience.
- Knowledge of the principles, fundamentals, and best practices of health physics and the risks associated with ionizing radiation exposure.
- Self-motivated, ability to work with supervision and professional judgment, and ability to work independently or as a team.
- Detail-oriented, demonstrated organizational and time management skills, and ability to manage/prioritize, track, and complete tasks/projects within established deadlines.
- Strong interpersonal skills and able to interact professionally and effectively with wide variety of individuals (researchers, staff, students, administrators, and regulators), behaving in accordance with institutional values.
- Committed to customer service, timely response, collaboration, cooperative professional relationships, and diversity.
- Ability to use sound judgment and act decisively in high-stress or emergency situations.
- Ability to demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills.
- The position involves presence in research labs, health care environments, animal facilities, and hazardous waste facilities. These locations may result in occasional occupational exposure to ionizing radiation, chemicals, and biological agents.

PREFERRED:
- Working knowledge and experience interpreting applicable federal or state regulations, standards, and guidance pertaining to the possession and safe use of radioactive material and radiation generating devices.
- Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication, including written and in-person training/instruction/presentations and communicating technical information clearly and concisely.
- Previous DOT HMR and/or HAZWOPER training.
- Competent using PC, office productivity applications, presentation applications, and database applications.
- Able to push, pull, and move/transport 20 pounds routinely (e.g., packages, radiation detection equipment, or shielding).
- Able to move freely throughout facilities (including stairs), have dexterity to survey areas that may not be easily accessible, and endurance to perform lab visits and emergency response activities.
- Able to pass a respirator medical evaluation if required to enroll in the respiratory protection program.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment, wear radiation dosimetry, and submit bioassay samples, as required.


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

The starting salary for the position is $70,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
