About this unit:

The Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) is a 22-bed ICU located in the Meijer Heart Center specializing in highly acute post-cardiac and advanced heart failure patients. This team is only hiring for night shift, however the initial orientation weeks will require daytime availability during weekdays. Nurse techs are able to care for a wide range of patients and devices including heart/lung transplant patients, post-operative open-heart patients, patients requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), CentriMag, Impella, and long-term ventricular assist devices (VAD). Experts in caring for the most critically ill patients in our area and throughout Michigan. We are at the forefront of cardiac medicine, engaging in cutting-edge innovation and research.

Scope of Work:

Nurse Technicians act as a team member in the delivery of quality patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). Responsibilities include taking vitals, checking blood sugars, bed bathing, ambulating, wound care, catheterization, ECMO Cannulation, and acting as a safety attendant for patients.

Cleans patient's environment / work area / equipment and communicates any equipment malfunctions to appropriate department / unit personnel.

Demonstrates a high standard of moral and ethical behavior. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality and security of patient, staff and organization data.

In addition, a Nurse Technician is often floated to other departments of higher need, with similar training.

Orientation

Employment in this unit begins with orientation to learn what's needed in the CTICU to care for complex critical care patients. Orientation weeks will require flexibility to train during weekdays, for 8-12 weeks in a row, before phasing into regular night shifts. The next available start date for CTICU orientation will be the week of December 1st.

  • Week 1: Requires classroom orientation 8am-4:30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday.
  • Weeks 2-12: will be mainly orienting on the CTICU unit for several weeks, with a preceptor, from 7am-7:30pm learning unique procedures, however there will be 2 additional required classroom orientations December 16th and 20th.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalentrequired
  • Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) Certification will be required within 90 days
  • 1 year of prior work experience in inpatient care strongly preferred
